Broomfield versus Highfield Victoria
Sunday 25th April 2010

Highfield Victoria 2 0 Broomfield

Given the recent disappointing visit to the Heybridge Swift FC ground for the league cup final Broomfield now faced the run-away leaders of the Premier Division (and current holders) in the final of the Coward Cup.

As such this was going to be an uphill battle for Broomfield. This said Broomfield have some good scalps to their belt to win through to the final so whilst the form book favoured Highfield, given the magic of the cup it was not perhaps a foregone conclusion.

What was needed was a good start to keep themselves in the game. Broomfield had begun brightly and were working the ball well however unfortunately got hit with a sucker blow early doors.

Highfield had been awarded a throw-in down towards Broomfield’s corner flag, and launched the ball into the six yard box. The ball was met with a couple of glancing headers and found the back of the net. As such Broomfield found themselves one down after six minutes.

Broomfield battled further and kept the their determination going, but unfortunately were hit with another first half body blow. Just short of half an hour gone Broomfield gave the ball away midway into their half. This was pounced upon by the Victorians who finished with aplomb.

Whilst both side competed throughout the game, and kept the respective keepers busy, the score sheet remained at 2 – 0.

There was plenty for the crowd to appreciate and having reached the final Broomfield acquitted themselves very well, but regrettably again came away empty handed.

Now it is left for the push to complete the league programme, but time is against Broomfield with only 5 weekend match days left.

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
