German Exchange

How Did It Start [29 Jan @ 9:56am]

The Exchange started back in 1979 Willfried Lubs advert short article “Newsman Herald” This being before United Kingdom became part of the European Community Fred Nicholls our the secretary answered the advert Wilfred Lubs & a Friend Heiner travelled to Broomfield in October 1979 They had a meeting in the Angle Public House Committee members from Broomfield included Mike Maynard, Alec Craig, Brian Marles, Colin Blackboro, Keith Shaw & Fred Nicholls. They stayed for 2 nights and over that time the exchange was discussed then an invite was given to the committee to visit Germany. Mike Maynard Alec Craig & Fred Nicholls departed for Germany in February 1980. Upon arrival 1am, they were taken to the Heinekamp Bar where a full Wertle Function was in full swing. Any one who knows the Heinekamp can picture what a great night that must have been. They were given a tour the following day of the football club & pitches. It was agreed the exchange would commence that year 1980 with the Germans visiting England. In July 1980 the first German exchange arrived they were met at Harwich & convoyed in cars to Broomfield. Our visitors were 2 teams lead by Paul Stratman, Christian Friedeman Rudi Appledoorn Willfried Sable & Rheiner Schumaker In 1980 Broomfield did not have a Clubhouse or a bar all the entertaining was held at the Angle. The Senior Section of the club before we became one agreed to underwrite the visit if needed but it wasn’t but we were grateful. The exchange was very successful and enjoyed by both parties An invitation was then given to Broomfield to travel to Germany the following year. In 1981 two teams travelled to Germany with managers Brian Marles & Mike Maynard. It took 17 hours Again the visit was very successful & friendships were starting to form.

Exchanges 30th Anniversary [29 Jan @ 9:56am]

All, I can now confirm details, prices and timings for our trip to Werlte between Sunday 24th May 2009 - Saturday 30th May 2009 for the 30th Anniversary German Exchange Visit. The coach will depart from Broomfield FC at approx 06:30 AM on Sunday 24th May 2009, in order to catch the 09:00 ferry departure from Harwich to Hook of Holland. For our return trip, we will be catching the 14:30 ferry from Hook of Holland (european time - GMT +1 hour) which is due to dock at Harwich at approx 20:00 hrs UK time. This means we will arrive back at the club between 21:30 and 22:00 hrs on the evening of saturday 30th May 2009. Even though the Pound has lost value against the Euro in recent weeks we have managed to negotiate an extremely good price and I am pleased to announce that the cost for the trip will be £120 per person. This is the 'all-in' price and is £10 less than my original estimate (as per my email of 19th December 2008 - attached). The only additional costs will be whatever amount of spending money each person decides to bring. We can take up to 80 persons as we have booked a 50-seater coach together with an option to take a further 30-seater coach if required. We now need to move quickly to establish a 'list of intent' comprising of the list of names of the persons who would like to go. As you know, although the exchange is primarily for our Under 12's, Under 13's and Under 14's squads, as this year is a significant milestone in the history of the exchange we will also be including players from the Under 11's and Under 15's. Please will all managers of these squads communicate this information to players and their parents and start to draw up a list of persons who would like to take part. I would like to start getting some feedback on the numbers at the forthcoming EGM on 3rd Feb 2009, by which time I will have further information regarding deposits required etc. If anybody has any questions please feel free to contact me. thanks and regards Steve
